FAQ: TANGO GRIP & STAND
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

When will I receive my Tango?

Good question. This is Kickstarter which means we will take you on the journey from design to manufacturing. In our case, the Tango design is largely complete and we are primarily working on DFM (design for manufacturing). We’ll send fun and informative messages every step of the way so you can track our progress towards delivery. Our rewards list “September 2022” as a delivery date. This is a conservative date and we are working very hard towards beating that delivery date. We’d rather over deliver than over promise.

Who is "Black Jet Labs" and what is their Kickstarter experience?

Tango was conceptualized and designed by experienced Industrial designers, engineers and creators Lukas Scheurer (Linkmount, Pen Station, Breeze Bag, among others) and Jake Epstein (Rocketbook). Many other partners, advisors and contributors helped bring this product to a market ready design . Collectively we are calling our team Black Jet Labs. Together we have run 10 successful crowdfunding campaigns and we have ALWAYS delivered the product.

If the adhesive bond is so strong, how can I remove the Tango from my phone case?

The removal process is quick and painless.

In short, the bond is strong because of the large circular surface area of adhesion and the structure of the phone in the case. By removing the phone from the case and flexing the case you can relieve the bond from the edges out, allowing the tango to be removed with no residue.

Please watch this video to see the process in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekBKtfDgjO8

You can then swap the adhesive pad and mount it to another phone!

Does Tango interfere with wireless charging?

Like any other grip, when placed in the center of your phone it can affect wireless charging. However, Tango is also very grippy when placed on the bottom of your phone where it does not interfere with wireless charging. And as a bonus, it can be used as a portrait stand. See the “Charging and Mounting” section of the campaign for more information about tradeoffs.

Is the grip floppy? Like a spring?

No. When, expanded the Tango feels virtually solid with a secure stretch to it. The Tango helix is composed of multiple thick elastic elements which all pull and push together making it extremely stable.

Last updated: February 16, 2022 07:01

Is it sharp?

As illustrated in the “engineered for comfort” diagram the steel core of the helix is heavily coated with a soft polyester (like a rubber sort of). That thickens the helix, curves the edges and softens the material so it is very comfortable against your fingers. Notably your fingers typically push against multiple elements at once so the Helix feels like a textured “virtual” solid.

How does it stand? Is there one side it stands on?

There are three tiny “detents” in the steel baseplate. This allows the top to be locked in to place in three orientations (top, left and right). Depending exactly where you mount your Tango, at least one of these positions will provide stand functionality. See our “Charging and Mounting” section for more information.

Does it stick to silicone cases like the standard apple case?

Yes absolutely, this was one of our requirements for the product from the outset. Our adhesive is specifically silicone-based so it sticks semi permanently to silicone cases, as well as any other smooth flat backed case.

Will the Tango work with universal magnet car mounts?

Yes, The Tango top plate is ferromagnetic stainless steel so it generally works with most universal style magnetic car mounts. You may have to collapse Tango after removing from car mount. But generally it works pretty well! Scroll down to our “Magnetic car mounts” section to see it in action!

What is the life cycle of the Tango?

Extensive engineering, iteration and design was put into the spring and it is essentially the heart of the product. We tested hundreds of combinations of steel alloys, hardnesses, spring tempering, spring thicknesses and shapes before coming to our final design. Along with our team we consulted multiple specialists in metallurgy, metal forming, stamping and shaping along the way. We have cycle tested it to an over stress position 10’s of thousands of cycles to confirm that it will last for years. All the metal we are using is stainless steel and thus rust resistant.

Will it be possible to "overstretch" the helix spring?

The helix is made from a fully hardened stainless spring steel so it always wants to return back to it’s original formed position. We have tested this extensively and the helix will stretch to over 3 inches requiring extreme force and still return to it’s original position again and again.

Will the polyester coating wear off overtime?

No and we have tested this extensively. The polyester coating is otherwise known as powdercoat and is extremely durable. It is considered in the industry to be an ideal replacement for traditional paint when more protection and wear resistance is required. The coating is resistant to chipping, fading, scratching and abrasion. This durability makes it well-suited for metal parts that come into contact with sunlight and other environmental factors. And is often used on gym equipment, automotive bumpers etc.
However it is also extremely soft to the touch and builds up to form a comfortable smooth volume around the metal, making the spring comfortable on your fingers.

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a launchpad for creators to raise funds for the initial production of their invention. Backers (that’s you!) can support the creator by pre-ordering the product at a discounted price.

Last updated: February 16, 2022 08:11

What does it mean to back a project (pledge)?

When you back a project, you’re pre-ordering the product. That means you’ll get it once it’s produced. Besides getting the product itself, you’re also joining a community. Follow along the production process, take part in important surveys and give the creator valuable feedback.

Last updated: February 16, 2022 08:11

How do I pledge?

In order to pledge, click that green button that says “Back this project”. You’ll get to select your shipping country and choose your desired pledge level and reward.

Last updated: February 16, 2022 08:11

When is my money collected?

Your money will be collected only after the project ends on February 24th If the project is cancelled for any reason, you won’t be charged.

Last updated: February 16, 2022 08:11

What payment methods can I use?

You can use any debit or credit card associated with Visa, Mastercard or American Express, as well as Discover and JCB cards. Kickstarter does not accept payments with PayPal.

Last updated: February 16, 2022 08:11

Where do you ship?

We ship to many countries around the world. If you do not see your home country in the shipping list when checking out, feel free to DM us.

Will I love the Tango?

Yes you will. We have prototypes so we know it’s an incredible product that not even a clever video can do justice. Before inventing the Tango we used ALL the other grips out there. It’s so nice to have something on your phone which aids in comfort and security. Other products are made from crap, really bulky, and kinda embarrassing to have on your phone as an adult. We spent over a year on Tango to ensure it was: Ridiculously thin - at 2.9mm it’s basically invisible to the touch Looks cool - by laser etching steel the Tango looks like it belongs in Tesla Super comfortable - you can use Tango for hours of scrolling A great stand - Some people tell us the only are looking for a stand - the Tango is a great opion It’s fun - The one thing you can’t convey in images is just how fun and satisfying it is to pop open and closed.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
